CRITERIA & INSTRUCTIONS

CRITERIA

Be of Native Hawaiian ancestry or descent.

Applicant must be Native Hawaiian, no minimum percentage or quantum of Hawaiian blood is required.

 

Enrollment in post-secondary institution.

Applicant is currently enrolled OR officially accepted into the upcoming term in a degree-seeking program at an accredited post-secondary educational institution.  The above statement also qualifies for certification programs.  Maritime focus is preferred, but not required.

 

Action plan for degree or certificate utilization.

Applicant has a career-based plan that utilizes the degree or certificate attained after course completion.  The applicant will use the essay portion of the application to describe their career pursuit.

Provide the Required Documents

The required documents below must be submitted with your completed Scholarship Application Form.

Proof of Identity & Hawaiian ancestry or descent

Along with a copy of photo identification (e.g., driver’s license, state ID, or passport), include a copy of either (a) a birth certificate or (b) your Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) registry card to verify your Hawaiian heritage.

Transcripts or Letter of Acceptance

Official current academic transcript(s) from post-secondary school/programs attended (if continuing school or training). You must request that your school/program forward the transcript directly to you first. Official transcripts must include the school/program stamp.

If not yet in school or training, a letter of acceptance from the school/program that you intend to attend; or, if not yet accepted, an explanation of when and how you expect such acceptance.

One Letter of Recommendation

The letter should explain why you are deserving of financial assistance for your education/training, and should not be from a relative.

Essay (typed or legibly handwritten)

The essay should include:

  • A statement of the ocean-related career or vocation that you intend to pursue.
  • How the school/program will help you achieve your goal.
  • Why you need financial assistance.
